What If Your Child Won’t Sit Still During a Photo Session? | A Real Family Guide
One of the biggest worries parents have before a family session

There’s one sentence I hear all the time before family sessions:
“My child never sits still…”
And honestly?
That’s usually not a problem at all.
Very often, the most energetic children create the most natural, emotional and genuine photographs.
Because a real family session is not about children sitting perfectly still and smiling at the camera for an hour.
It’s about connection, movement, play and real moments together.
I don’t expect “perfect” children
Many parents arrive thinking their children need to:
- behave perfectly
- smile constantly
- look at the camera
- stay still
But children are simply children.
And that’s exactly what makes the images meaningful.
The best photos often happen in the middle of the chaos
Some of the most beautiful moments happen:
- while they run
- while they laugh
- while they hide behind their parents
- while they hug unexpectedly
That’s why my sessions are natural and relaxed.
I don’t force stiff poses or artificial moments.
What if my child is shy?
That’s completely normal too.
Some children need a few minutes to feel comfortable.
Others need more time.
And that’s perfectly okay.
I never force interaction before they’re ready.
We connect first.
We play.
And eventually everything flows naturally.
The goal is not perfection
The more relaxed parents are, the better the session usually goes.
We’re not trying to create perfect children.
We’re creating real memories.
The most valuable photographs are rarely the most perfect ones
Years later, families rarely remember whether their child’s hair looked perfect.
They remember:
- the laughs
- the hugs
- the little expressions
- who they truly were at that stage
And that’s what matters most.
