What to wear for a photoshoot: a simple guide for families

One of the most common questions before a session is always the same:

What should we wear?

And while it may seem like a small detail, clothing has a big impact on the final result.

The good news: it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Less is more

If there’s one basic rule, it’s this.

Avoid:

  • logos

  • bold patterns

  • very bright colours

Why?

Because they distract from what really matters: you.

Colours that always work

Neutral and soft tones are the best choice.

For example:

  • off-white

  • beige

  • earthy tones

  • light grey

  • pastels

They create calm, harmony and a timeless look.

Coordinate, don’t match

You don’t need to wear the same thing.

In fact, it’s better not to.

The key is coordination:

  • similar colour palette

  • similar style

  • visual balance

This keeps the photos natural.

Fabrics and textures

Fabrics also make a difference.

Great options:

  • cotton

  • linen

  • knit

They add warmth and softness without overpowering the image.

What about the baby?

In newborn sessions, even less is needed.

Usually:

  • you don’t need to bring outfits

  • the style is simple and natural

  • the focus is on your baby

Avoid this

  • character prints

  • neon colours

  • uncomfortable clothing

  • mixing too many styles

The most important thing

That you feel like yourselves.

If you’re comfortable, it shows.
If you recognise yourselves, it feels real.

And that’s what makes a photograph meaningful.
